Sarah led Callie into the indoor arena, small flickers of sunlight peeked through the boards of the roof. Sarah halted the blood bay in the center of the arena and patted her arched neck. Pulling down her stirrup irons on both sides of the brown saddle and making sure her girth was tight enough. Sarah gathered up her reins on her Mexican Grakle bridle and elegantly sprung off the ground into the warm leather saddle. "Now my lady, lets get you warmed up first!" explained Sarah cheerily to Callie. Calle sighed but moved into a forward walk as Sarah nudged her.
Sarah worked on Callie's paces first, speeding her up then slowing her done, performing half-halts to test if Callie was paying attention. Once satisfied with the walk, Sarah asked Callie for a trot. The mare eagerly bounded into a trot, becoming quite heavy with her hooves. "C'mon now CeeCee, thats not your trot! Stop being so lazy and get some spring in your step." she exclaimed. Callie snorted and dragged her legs, ignoring what Sarah had said. Sarah gathered up her reins and used her lower legs in aid of a faster pace. Callie picked up her feet and began to prance more, performing the trot she was famous for. "I swear your 3/4 Arab and just a 1/4 Thoroughbred." said Sarah quietly as they dodged inbetween the 12 sets of colourful jumps, 10 set at 4ft and 1 set at 3.6ft and 1 at 3.9ft. At the corner, Sarah slid her left leg infront of the girth and her right leg behind and gave a small tap with her heels, immediately Callie sprung into a canter and Sarah sat, in flow with Callie's strides. Sarah rode Callie over the 3.6ft jump a few times, preparing her muscles for the small course.
They headed for the first jump, a simple 3.6ft and as Callie approached, she began to get forward and eager. Sarah held her back, knowing she was going to have to judge the strides otherwise Callie would rush the whole course. Seeing a stride for Sarah, was like beating an egg for a cook, easy! Judging in her head as they neared the jump, Sarah held a tight grip of the reins through her black gloves, slowing Callie as much as she could. They approached, took-off and landed safely. Although Callie was too early. "My fault CeeCee, I should of judged earlier!" she apologised. Callie tossed her head as she eyed up the next jump. "3, 2, 1." called Sarah aloud as Callie took off perfectly. And with a light landing Sarah praised Callie. Onto the 4 footers now and Sarah began to ride Callie strong, knowing that the mare was beginning to get excited.
Over the third, fourth and fifth, Callie jumped beautifully, beginning to listen to Sarah. They rode around to the double with two strides inbetween. Sarah slowed Callie down then as they approached gave her a tap with the whip to make her jump higher. Callie sprung off and cleared the first of the double but fell behind and knocked the rail on the second. Sarah shook her head but spoke reassuring words to Callie, telling her it was O.K. The seventh was an oxer. This was Callie's weak point. She wasn't very good at stretching and jumping high at the same time. But Sarah rode her forwards, towards the fence, Sarah had a small feeling Callie would try to run out or refuse so she kept her leg and hands strong. "3, 2, 1!" called Sarah giving Callie a tap with the crop. Callie sprung off and stretched her hardest, they cleared it.
